RESUMO

This is the first report of parasitism by Gongylonema sp. in a free-ranging callitrichid from the Atlantic forest of Espírito Santo, Brazil. A juvenile male of Geoffroy's marmoset (Callithrix geoffroyi) was euthanized due to poor prognosis, then necropsied. Samples of the tongue were collected for routine histological processing. Microscopically, there were transversal sections of adult nematodes within the epithelial layer of the mucosa of the tongue. Lingual scraping demonstrated a small number of oval embryonated eggs with a thick capsule. The morphology of the adult parasites and the eggs, associated with its location, were compatible with the Spirurida nematode of the genus Gongylonema. Further studies are needed to evaluate the impact of this parasite on free-ranging callitrichid populations.(AU)


Este é o primeiro relato de parasitismo por Gongylonema sp. em um calitriquídeo de vida livre proveniente da Mata Atlântica do Espírito Santo, Brasil. Um sagui-da-cara-branca (Callithrix geoffroyi), macho, jovem, foi eutanasiado, devido a prognóstico desfavorável, e necropsiado. Fragmentos de língua foram coletados para processamento histológico de rotina. Microscopicamente, havia cortes transversais de nematoides adultos na mucosa da língua. Na raspagem da mucosa da língua, foi observada pequena quantidade de ovos larvados ovais com cápsula espessa. A morfologia do parasita adulto e dos ovos, associada à localização do agente, é compatível com nematoide Spirurida do gênero Gongylonema. São necessários estudos adicionais para avaliar o impacto desse parasito nas populações de calitriquídeos de vida livre.(AU)

Abstract Acuariidae nematodes are normally found in the digestive tract of aquatic birds, including Procellariiformes. Were examined Calonectris borealis (n = 4), Diomedea exulans (n = 1), Macronectes giganteus (n = 8), Thalassarche chlororhynchos (n = 5), Thalassarche melanophrys (n = 15), Procellaria aequinoctialis (n = 4), Puffinus gravis (n = 2) and Puffinus puffinus (n = 6), collected on the southern coast of RS, Brazil. A total of 16 birds (35.5%) were parasitized by two species of Acuariidae. Stegophorus diomedeae and Seuratia shipleyi were identified, with prevalences of 26.1% and 21.7%, respectively. Few studies on nematodes in Procellariiformes have been conducted. Here, the acuariids Seuratia shipleyi in Calonectris borealis and Procellaria aequinoctialis and Stegophorus diomedeae in Diomedea exulans, Procellaria aequinoctialis and Thalassarche chlororhynchos were reported for the first time.


Resumo Os nematoides Acuariidae são normalmente encontrados no trato digestivo de aves aquáticas, incluindo os Procellariiformes. Foram examinadas Calonectris borealis (n=4), Diomedea exulans (n=1), Macronectes giganteus (n=8), Thalassarche chlororhynchos (n=5), Thalassarche melanophrys (n=15), Procellaria aequinoctialis (n=4), Puffinus gravis (n=2) e Puffinus puffinus (n=6), coletados na costa sul do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Dentre os exemplares examinados, 16 (35,5%) estavam parasitados por duas espécies de Acuariidae. Foram identificados Stegophorus diomedeae e Seuratia shipleyi, com prevalência de 26,1% e 21,7%, respectivamente. Existem poucos estudos relacionados a nematoides em Procellariiformes, e aqui registra-se pela primeira vez os Acuariidae Seuratia shipleyi em Calonectris borealis e Procellaria aequinoctialis, e Stegophorus diomedeae em Diomedea exulans, Procellaria aequinoctialis e Thalassarche chlororhynchos.

RESUMO

The pathology induced by the nematode Camallanus cotti in the aquarium fishes Beta splendens (beta fish) and Poecilia reticulata (guppy) consisted of gross and microscopic lesions, the former characterized by abdominal swelling with reddish parasites protruding from the anus in both fish hosts and the latter, similar in the beta fishes and guppies, by hemorrhage, congestion, edema, a few glandular elements, and extensive erosion areas in the rectum mucosa, with a marked thickening of the wall and absence of inflammatory infiltrate. Lesions were associated with the presence of several worms attached to the wall or free in the rectal lumen. This is the second reference of the parasite in Brazil and the first report of pathological findings related to this nematode species that is also briefly redescribed and illustrated for the first time on the basis of Brazilian samples.

RESUMO

Five advanced third-stage larvae of a newly identified type of genus Gnathostoma were collected from freshwater eels, Fluta alba, which were purchased at a market in Nakhon Nayok, central Thailand. The most remarkable characteristic of the newly identified larvae was the larger body size compared with any other larva of Gnathostoma spp. They were also distinguishable from other species by the shape of their hooklets, which branched in a complex manner at the base: this had not been previously observed in any other larval Gnathostoma. The newly described larvae had an average number of 44.5, 45.0, 49.0 and 55.1 hooklets on the head-bulb from the first to the fourth rows, respectively, which were comparable to those of larval G. spinigerum. However, the average number of nuclei in each intestinal cell was 2.21 and fewer than those of the larvae of G. spinigerum. These results suggest that the new type of larvae belong to either G. vietnamicum, G. malaysiae, or constitute a new species of the genus Gnathostoma.
